It’s great on this day to give thanks for things and people. But the day was not invented to be thankful for what and who we have, at least not more than who has provided for us thus far. The pilgrims were thankful, but they were thankful to God for his providence over them. In the same way, we need to focus our appreciation toward the one who deserves it: to God who gives the blessings for which we are thankful on this day.
Of course we’re thankful for our family and friends, that goes without saying… but don’t let it. Say it. Tell people how much you care today! It’s gratifying, it shows people you care. But, if all we do is give praise and show appreciation for the people in our lives, we’ll have missed the point of this holiday! It’s not just about the people in our lives, but rather the one who gave us life!
Let’s not be so caught in giving thanks to everyone and everything today that we miss giving thanks to One who brought it all to pass. Let’s not take the thanks rightly due our God for His goodness and bestow it on the blessings we have received. When you get a gift, do you thank the gift or the one who gave it?
Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good. His mercies indeed endure forever! Praise Him! Thank Him! And then enjoy what He has giving you to be thankful for.
As always, thanks for reading.
