Humans have a proven 100% death rate. The end is inescapable and there are two eternities to choose from. Heaven is a reward for the sons and daughters of God Himself; those who have been redeemed by the blood of Jesus Christ. For everyone else… those who did not accept the free payment for their sins, they will spend eternity in Hell; a place of isolation, separation, and torment.
How could God do this? If God is love, why doesn’t He save everyone? Why did God create sin in the first place?
God did not create sin. He gave humans the capacity to choose, not necessarily the propensity to sin. That’s something we’ve developed and crafted over millennia. Sin is disobeying God. It isn’t something He built into us, and it is not His fault that we sin.
We are accountable for our lives, what we do grieves God because though He loves us, He has to punish us for our sins; because He is good and just.
Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: –Matthew 25:41
Condemned to a devil’s Hell. Before we answer the question how could a loving God do this, let me show you something about God you may not realize. First, why did God send these people to Hell?
For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal. –Matthew 25:42-46
God is sovereign, it is His nature to be pure, to be just, and to be righteous. How can He be pure if He associates with sinners? How can He be just if He allows sinners into Heaven? How can He be righteous if He does not serve sentence to criminals? Part of His divine nature is holiness: He is a righteous judge and is never wrong. But… why not show mercy?
You killed His son!
Think about God for a moment. He is the father of Jesus. He is all knowing, and He is ultimate love. That means He not only feels love but is the source of all feeling. God loved you so much that He wanted to be with you, so He sent His Son Jesus to take your sin on Himself and die with it on a cross. God couldn’t even look at His Son when Jesus died because He can’t look at our sin. Your sin and mine killed Jesus. You’d think God would hate us. But He doesn’t. Instead, because your sin was paid for by Jesus Christ, God pursues you because He loves you. But fast-forward to the end of our time on earth. God, sitting on the white throne of judgement. He looks down at sinners and I can imagine Him saying something like this:
“I gave you every chance I could give! I sent my Son to die for you! I gave you a choice to live, to love me as I love you! Why? Why did you not believe?”
It’s not God’s fault that sinners go to Hell. The Bible says we are without excuse.
For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, [even] his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: –Romans 1:20
Even the very nature of God can be clearly seen in creation. The spiritual things can be seen by our physical eyes. For those who have verbally heard the gospel spoken or preached they are double accountable. They have rejected God by witness of nature and Man alike. The Bible says:
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. –2 Peter 3:9
God will one day destroy the earth but He isn’t eager to; for the longer He tarries is more opportunity for someone to accept His love. No one, no one is more heartbroken over people going to Hell than God and He did everything He could to prevent it. The one thing God would never do is eliminate our right to choose. His love is so pure and so real that He could never accept an artificial love in return.
For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten son; that whosoever believeth in him shall mot perish, but have everlasting life.–John 3:16
At the expense of His Son’s life, God loves you. And Jesus is pleading for you to come to Him.
All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.–John 6:37
God is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentence. You see, sin is our fault: Hell is our just and deserving reward. If life was fair, we’d all be in Hell. But, the beauty of grace and salvation is that they make life unfair. God did everything He could do so you wouldn’t have to spend eternity without him in a place called Hell. Now it’s up to you.
As always, thanks for reading.
