Nightlights

I don’t care about the lost world, living under the shroud of darkness that prevents the light from breaking through. I don’t care about the hell bound souls without hope and peace who will burn in everlasting torment because of my silence. I don’t even care about you, my readers, you can go jump off a cliff for all I care.

I apologize, I did not mean any of those things, they are my first illustration. Those statements are harsh, cutting, hurtful things to say. No doubt you did not think very kindly of me when you read them. Assumptions and ideas jumped into your head. You would never say these things, you would never make such angry accusations against innocent people. Yet, if we have darkness in our hearts, if we harbor evil in our souls, we are hindering the power of God in our lives. If we do anything to inhibit, limit, or prevent God from moving in and through us. We make those statements in our hearts. I heard it said: “You are as comitted to God as you want to be”.

Your closeness in a relationship with Almighty God depends entirely upon you. God makes conditional promises: draw nigh unto me and I will draw nigh unto you. That is a promise from God himself, the closer we get to Him, the closer He will get to us. That is why the statement, “You are as comitted to God as you want to be”, is so accurate. It depends upon you: what you do, how you live, if you regard or harbor sin in your heart and in your life. Is there darkness in you? Are you hiding the light of Christ?

If I’m preaching to the choir, then the choir needs to hear it most. I often examine my life, my ministry and that of my family and ask myself: “What in my life is preventing this from moving foreward? What am I doing that is inhibiting God from doing miraculous things with my family?”

Those are tough questions with tough answers. But, conviction isn’t my job, correction is. The Holy Spirit living inside of me brings conviction, and based upon that conviction of my sins I first acknowledge I was wrong, then aim to correct my life. We don’t often realize it, but when we regard sin in our hearts, when our lives hinder the work of God in our personal ministry and the ministries we are connected to, we are essentially making those statement with which I opened this post.

I don’t care about the lost world, living under the shroud of darkness that prevents the light from breaking through. I don’t care about the hell bound souls without hope and peace who will burn in everlasting torment because of my silence.

If something in our life is hindering God working in and through us, it is the same as if we cast those souls in Hell ourselves because our testimony may have been the only gospel they ever heard. The burden of the gospel is a heavy one, one that all Christians have been called to bear. We have been entrusted with the gospel, we were counted worthy to share in the sufferings of Christ. The spreading of the gospel is not a responsibility to be taken lightly.

What are you doing to spread the light of Christ? What has God called you to? Are you lifting up Jesus that all men may be drawn unto Him? We are called to be lights in a dark world. Just one light shining against utter darkness can be seen by men a great distance off. Light is powerful, light peirces darkness, light is life. Let all of us be Nightlights.
